Cloud Hosting

The computing term "cloud" quite simply means a distributed network. However, over the past few years it has grown to be a buzzword (a word used by businesses to attract attention) used by nearly every service. Almost every provider will offer one a "cloud" of some sort, and thus one needs to be careful to find the right one.

A cloud like Amazon's EC2 service is a distributed virtual system. In simpler terms this is a system floating around several node computers, which distribute the virtual systems load across each other. One node can fail, and the system will still not be put offline. Also if the system has a sudden need for expansion (eg, more disk space or RAM) then the change can be done on-the-fly by adding more nodes to support the system. Several systems can even be put on these nodes, allowing a provider to sell services on a on-demand basis for multiple clients, keeping the servers working 24/7.

This is obviously complicated. For a easy description one could just call a cloud a bottomless (infinite) glass of orange juice. You can drink as much orange juice as you like, but you will charged for every unit of orange juice you drink. If for some reason you were really thirsty you could drink a gallon of juice. And if you were only using some juice to wash down some medication you could just use a few sips. For each of these situations you only pay for each unit of juice you drink, and need not worry about how much juice is left to drink. For all you know the juice could be magical, or have some sort of transportation system hooked up to the nearest grocery store. It doesn't matter regardless - you use the resources you need, and pay accordingly. Sometimes you can pay a flat rate for a gallon of juice a week, and then pay per drink from there, but it is fundamentally the same thing.

Other types of clouds are not true clouds per se, but are just distributed systems. They do not function as a bottomless glass of orange juice, and instead work in different ways. A popular example is Google's GMail service, which runs on top of many distributed systems hosted entirely by Google, but does has a set limit of messages you can store. Systems like this, whether free or paid, are only a cloud system because they are hosted redundantly by someone else. You can access the system anywhere, usually over an web browser like Internet Explorer or Firefox.

Thus there are two types of cloud hosting to look in to. There is the bottomless orange juice model, and the worry-free remote hosted cloud. Any other cloud is merely taking advantage of the buzzword for extra business, just like businesses overuse(d) the phrase Web 2.0.

Now that the two clouds are defined some usage cases should be. Specifically, why would you use such a pay per use model (the orange juice example) over just flat-rate hosting? Well, here's a quick breakdown:

  • Your hosting a website with extremely varying traffic demand (one week a million viewers, the next a half a million)

  • Your website is being advertised on a TV commercial, and you do not know if you in-house servers or shared hosting can handle the demand from the viewers

  • You want to support an infinite rather than finite number of users

  • You need extra redundancy

  • Your server software tends to spike loads

  • Your website is the next Facebook (which uses a private orange juice model cloud)

And for the worry-free remote cloud model:

  1. You do not have an in-house IT department

  2. You don't care how much the solution costs per month, and whether the cost varies, as long as it does not break and is accessible from anywhere

  3. You have a growing population to serve

  4. You have little hands-on skills to run a server

  5. You understand the risks of outsourcing possibly unencrypted data (you can encrypt your own data with the latter type of cloud, providing you know how)

  6. You want someone else to blame if the server goes down

To choose one of the two just do some research on what you need with the above lists take into account. Other factors like price are definitely important too, but should be put as a lower priority to provider reputation. Be sure to check for privacy policies on any provider, to ensure they will comply with any possible governmental or business standards you must maintain in regards to data.

Cloud hosting is in essence (no, not cologne or perfume) complicated, and while the term is still a buzzword it will remain so. Choose a provider wisely, and always maintain backup data somewhere off-site from the cloud to ensure safety.
